A prestigious wine competition judged entirely by prominent women from Japan's wine industry is to be launched here in January 2014.

The Sakura Japan Women's Wine Awards is the first wine award in Japan, which recruits an all-female panel to judge wines in a competition.

The Sakura Japan Women's Wine Awards will recognize the best wines submitted, in various categories, as well as wines the judges believe will appeal to women wine buyers -- women being a potent consumer force in the Japanese wine market.

Given the purchasing power and scope of spending of women in Japan, including in wine selection, it is clear that the appreciation of wines from the female perspective is extremely relevant.

We consider that the evaluation of wines through women's eyes is a breakthrough in the conventional system of judging wine in this country.

Wines will be blind tasted, providing the opportunity for unknown wines to be evaluated solely on merit. Wines will be judged according to different categories. Our judges represent a variety of wine specialists in Japan, including sommeliers, wine journalists, wine educators, wine buyers and influencers.Chairperson is Yumi Tanabe, principal of the Tanabe Yumi Wine School.

The Sakura Japan Women's Wine Awards is committed to the highest standards of competition. Wines will be accepted for competition from a field of unlimited entries. Judges will award Diamond, Double Gold, Gold and Silver medals in approximately 50 categories.
